| Exterior Features | A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY: In 1833, at the age of 18, James S. McKenzie, an emigrant from Scotland, purchased 158 acres and built this stone house. In 1840, he married Jannet McLaurin and the couple raised six children on this farm. One of their sons, Duncan, remained with his parents and lived here with his wife Margery and their daughter Jeanette. For the 1800's, this was the McKenzie House. This one-and-a-half storey limestone home is deep and expansive in size. Note the two chimneys, indicating that heating systems were originally located at each end of the house. The replica front door has two sidelights and a triple light transom. You will see a mix of limestone and fieldstone used on the exterior: hammered large rectangular stones at the corners; hammered narrow stone lintels over each window and doorway; the front wall is finished in dressed stone; the side and rear walls are rustic with rough limestone & fieldstones as filler. |
